I had missed that little dig. I like it. And I agree with it. I also like when someone (I think in a movie or TV show, but I can't recall which one,) said:

If, in defending ourselves against them, we sacrifice our ideals, then they have already won.

Yesterday was a great day. The Mall was closed at 9 a.m. My family and I stood on the fringe, hemmed in on all sides. We could barely see one of the jumbotron screens. But when Obama took the oath of office, my youngest atop her dad's shoulders pointed her arms in v-formation to the sky and began chanting with the crowd "O-ba-ma!" It was worth it just to see that.

Murph - I believe it was Benjamin Franklin who said "They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Was this it?

It certainly sounds similar, and was probably based on it, but I was not familiar with BF's version.

I really do think it was a TV show or movie where I heard it. Maybe it was Jack Bauer. ;-P

There's such a new warmth amongst Europeans towards America just with Obama being president and Bush being gone.

1st Lady - That is truly heartwarming news to hear. Now we don't have to pretend to be Canadians the next time we're in Italy (true story).

And it is not a European thing. My friend in Singapore said people there were looking forward to the new possibilities Obama inspires.

Now, that the rhetoric is passed, though, I am eager to see something productive take place.
